What is a missionary?

Our church had a missions banquet this weekend. To raise their missions budget for next year and also began taking faith pledges. We support 6 missionary families around the world doing different ministries. Part of the proceeds for the missions banquet went to fund a book project. Our Pastor and a few others are traveling to Armenia later this year to work with a publisher about having some Christian books translated into a local language and distribute on the part of the world. Some of the recent classics like John Bevere are among those being translated I think.

At the dinner one of the people at my table asked if I were a missionary. I was surprised at my own reaction. Bob and I are planning on being full time sent missionaries in the future. But at the moment I am not officially a missionary in that sense of the word. But I do consider the work I am doing to help OM as well as getting a job at Media Production Group to be mission work. In that above all my boss is God and the work that I am doing is for the greater good and furtherance of the Kingdom of God on Earth. My answer to his question was a "yes and no" I guess my point is really being a missionary is just a state of mind. Nichole Nordeman has a song that says, "You have to serve someone" If you live your life and you choose to serve God in whatever occupation you have to earn a living. Then you are a missionary.
